P E R S O N A L || Liam’s First Birthday

Normally, I don’t share personal pictures on here-there’s so much excitement and beautiful people to share with you, I never have time. But now that wedding season has ended on a beautiful note, I’ve had some time to lift my head up, and look around.

It’s fall! Trees are changing color, the smell of burning wood, fall leaves, and pumpkin-everything permeates the air! It’s my favorite season to dress for, my favorite season to shoot in, and my favorite season to eat in.

But more than that, Fall is now home to the celebration of the most precious and amazing gift I’ve ever received, my little one, Liam. It’s been a YEAR since he was born, ONE. FULL. YEAR. I’ve been running around like crazy preparing his party, and buying presents, and stopping to have a good cry when I realize my baby isn’t a baby anymore.

Ready or not, he’s walking, gabbing and pointing, laughing with me, and just this morning, I picked him up out of his crib, and his little hand held my cheek, and he looked at me like I was his greatest treasure. I just about squeezed his guts out, you guys. That’s how precious that moment was.

Take a look at some pictures I caught of him playing on his birthday! ❤

That awkward moment where you try to surprise them, but when you open the door and turn on the light, they're already awake, and playing with toys.

Do you have any traditions for your kids’ birthdays? Did you have any when you were a kid?

F A M I L Y|| Jen & Mark

I knew I’d like Jen when she told me how to do a sock bun. That sealed it for me. Really, can you blame me? Sock buns seemed out of my league, and then she walked into my life, and I was thrust into a glitz and glam hairstyle that improved my life 150%. Probably not that much, but it helped.

Jen and Mark have a beautiful house, great interior decorating skills, and great taste in clothing, pets, and friends. Taking pictures of them and their incredibly awesome bulldogs, in their element, was a walk in the park. Literally.

I have two more sessions I can’t WAIT to share, and then this weekend, I’m second-shooting a wedding!

Did I mention I’m obsessed with weddings? Because I am.

Puppy and Baby Picture!

The last few days have been INSANE.

Mother’s Day was hectic, and super emotional, because, you know, I’M A MOM NOW, and then the next day TJ broke his hand, and now I’m pretty much doing all the chores, cooking, cleaning, baby moving, changing, clothing, bathing, and still trying to run a business.

It’s been two days, and I already feel like I need a vacation.

ON THE PLUS SIDE.

I started honing in on how I edit images–and I’m finding a *groove* to it. I edited an entire engagement session–and had another set up for final sharpening and vignetting (56 images, almost 4.5 hours of work), and then my husband turned off his computer, and my computer turned off, and all my progress was lost.

I spent the rest of the day on tumblr, quietly mourning.

I just wanted to upload one quick pic from Mother’s Day, because I’m EXHAUSTED. Let’s see how well I can keep up on my mission to capture life every day for the month. :3

Day 17 Challenge: BEST FRIENDS! Momo and Liam are thick as thieves--meaning Momo knows Liam could squash her in a second, but still mothers him when he tries new things.

Day 12-13: Written Words, and Technology

So last night, I got home, put Liam down for bed, and had a date night with my husband. His grandfather had been in town for the last week, and had just left, so we were trying to give ourselves a little time to unwind before starting on editing, answering emails and voicemails, and going back to our crazy lives.

It was so nice to have that time with him. So much so, that after the movie was done, I just went to bed.

Totally spaced posting a blog. Silly me.

So tonight, I give you two entries: One, Written Words, and Two, Technology.

This type of image is called a double exposure. It's where you take several images and compile them into one frame to make a singular image. It's used for showing motion in a still frame, or, in this case, to create a collage of different things in one shot. This was done in camera, and the only change was a boost in color and a contrast boost. I can't wait to experiment with it while I shoot my engagement session this weekend!!!

Written Word: I take notes whenever I learn something of value. My 5 subject notebook is full of pages strewn with doodles, snarky faces, comments, quotes, and directions, action formulas, and occasionally, small words of encouragement--something I'll write when I'm feeling incredible, invincible, and I know the weak side of me will need to see those words. <3

Day 10: Hands….And Also Day 9: Old REDO.

So I hated myself all day today for lazing out of yesterdays challenge like that. TJ sprained his ankle a few days ago, and so I’ve been pulling double duty, doing shoots, wrangling the baby, and getting things for him since he can’t walk on it, and it’s caused me to want to do nothing but sleep. Unfortunately, TJ tosses and turns in pain all night because he keeps bumping his ankle, and Liam is teething pretty good right now–so he’s grumping his way through sleepy time.

So I’m exhausted.

Exhausted or not, I was so excited about today! We had a picnic at the park with my husbands family, who are in town. We got some family pictures, TJ took a few of me and Liam snuggling, and it was great.

Just before we left to go home for the evening,I got a great idea to get both shots at once!  I got an incredibly cranky Liam, sat him in Great-Grandpa Bill’s lap, and took a shot of them holding hands.

It’s an incredibly precious image that’s two part-Old skin, paired with the soft, newborn skin and tiny fingers, and Hands. My two challenges, in one shot.

I’m incredibly grateful to this daily challenge–it’s pushing my photography, but it also makes me think about how I’m going to work it in Photoshop later. I like that I’m beginning to see Burn’d slight shadows for a darker, grittier look, and a sharpening to bring out and emphasis the worn and leather’d knuckles that time has etched into his hands.

One image. Two lifetimes. So much to think about, and so emotive.

It’s why I love doing what I do.

Day 6: Books

When I was 5 years old, I could read pretty much anything. And I did.

It was especially traumatizing for me, when, hungry for some sort of readable material, ANY material, I found my mother’s romance novels.

That’s a lot to take in at 5 years old.

Grump is only 6 months old, but already, he has a voracity for books. We MUST read him Batman books every night before bed. Occasionally, I’ll slip in some Sesame Street, or some award-winning children’s book, but he doesn’t care for them. He just loves Batman.

I’ve always loved the books by Anne McCaffrey. The world of Pern held my gaze when I was as little as 8 years old-every novel was another opportunity to fight a deadly battle with a dragon by my side.

Today I did minimal editing–I upped the temp a bit on my shots, because I shot at White Flourescent lighting for the first few minutes, but otherwise, I felt like the organic feel of the images appealed to my urgent need to grasp at every little moment of time I could get my greedy fingers on.

Too soon, he’ll be walking, and then running, and then jumping, and then falling. Soon his world will be dirt, and bicycle wheels, and war wounds, and falling in love with Jocelyn in kindergarten, and giving her an earthworm ring to seal the pending marriage.

So tonight, I’m posting, and running, so I can scoop up my tiny little Grump, and listen to his belly laugh, and breathe in his baby smell, and revel in the glorious gift and mystery and even slight terror of watching another life unfold.

You should do the same. ❤

He actually has a lot more books, and I thought it'd be cool to stack them next to him, but he was pretty content to make sure he could see all of them. ALL. of them. At once.
